(Grayson County, KY) – A new, much more extensive library could become reality for Grayson County by 2014.
Lisa Jones, Grayson County Library Director, several members of the library board and friends of the library, attended the Grayson County Fiscal Court meeting Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, to show the final design plans for the new facility.
Monica Sumner, consultant of the site plan design and project manager, laid out the details of the building – which will sit on five acres near the new judicial building on Carroll Gibson Blvd, off of Wallace Ave. in Leitchfield.
The building will host over 65 parking spaces, the outside façade will be complementary of the new judicial building and will have outside children areas, as well.
The square footage, however, hinges on a possible grant through the Kentucky Department of Library and Archives. The Grayson County Library Board applied for the grant and has cleared round one, but there are requirements for the grant.
They must meet the state minimal standard that is measured per capita, proportional to the population of the county. Grayson County should have a 17,500 sq. ft. facility to meet standards but the board was planning to build a 14,100 sq. ft. building due to budget constraints.
The grant will infuse $20,000 per year towards the bond payment of the facility for the life of the loan. The additional money would finance the additional 3,400 sq. ft. that would have to be built to meet the grants requirements.
If the grant is not approved, the board will continue on with constructing the 14,100 sq. ft. library.
The group is ready to begin the bidding process in January and is hoping to have a completed library in 2014, but they are waiting to hear if they receive the grant, which could stall the bidding process until the spring of 2013.
The county worked with the library board to trade their current building for the five acres on Carroll Gibson Blvd. County Attorney Clay Ratley penned a memorandum to work out the details of the swapped properties, not only for the county but for the grant application. The court approved the memorandum.
The cost of the 17,500 sq. ft. library is estimated at $4,219,000. The cost for the 14,100 sq. ft. library is estimated at $3,447,880.
