(Leitchfield, KY) – As the American Legion Post #81 closed its doors Saturday night and began to shuttle people home courtesy of their van, the vehicle was struck by a drunk driver on Mill Street in Leitchfield.
As the blue van was stopped at a stop sign, a black Chevrolet Impala driven by Phillip D. Whitely (20) of Falls of Rough slammed into the rear end of the van, pushing it approximately 125 feet, according to the Leitchfield Police Department report prepared by Officer Townsend.
The Chevrolet Impala came to rest partially in the parking lot of Farmer’s Feed Mill restaurant.
No injuries were reported but the Chevrolet Impala suffered “very severe” damage, according to the report.
The van had minor damage and was drivable.
The van was carrying five people at the time of the collision, including the diver, Robert Douthitt, and four passengers: Beverly Elmore, Robert Lloyd, Kevin Basham, and Geneva Basham.
The accident happened at 12:59 a.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013.
Whitley was found to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
He was arrested and charged with DUI, 1st Offense and Possession of Alcohol by a Minor.
