Churchill Downs ups security for Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Churchill Downs has announced tighter security and expanded screening for patrons, employees and vendors headed to the track for the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Track officials on Thursday asked fans to be vigilant about anything that might seem unusual or suspicious and notify security or racetrack personnel.

Track officials say they reviewed security measures after Monday's bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon. Multiple items will not be allowed inside the racetrack, including coolers, cameras with detachable lenses, lenses more than six-inches long and tripods.

Also barred are purses more than 12 inches in any dimension, cans, fireworks, laser pointers and noisemakers and air horns.

Race officials say for the May 3 Kentucky Oaks and May 4 Kentucky Derby, employees, vendors and media are subject to electric wand searches.
