Ky. man among 7 killed in Afghanistan plane crash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A 51-year-old Kentucky man is among seven Americans killed when their National Air Cargo plane crashed near an Air Force base in Afghanistan.

National Air Cargo Vice President Shirley Kaufman says the other six victims were from Michigan.

Maintenance crewman Timothy Garrett's ex-wife says they had been divorced for a while but were still best friends. Elena Garrett of Jeffersonville, Ind., says he was a wonderful father and son and would do anything to help someone.

She and Garrett have two daughters, who are 11 and 12 years old.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the Dubai-bound Boeing 747-400 operated by National Air Cargo crashed just after takeoff Monday from Bagram Air Base around 11:20 a.m. local time.

The plane is owned by National Airlines, an Orlando, Fla.-based subsidiary of National Air Cargo. Kaufman said it was carrying vehicles and other cargo.
