Heavy rains leave hole in state route 987

PINEVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Heavy rains have washed a portion of a Bell County highway into the Cumberland River.

Chris Webb, who lives nearby discovered on Tuesday that a portion of state route 987 near mile marker 7 was gone. Much of the ground underneath has washed away as well, leaving a big hole.

Webb told WYMT-TV (http://bit.ly/ZGKkze) that it looks like a cliff in the middle of the road.

Kentucky Transportation Department officials said no one was on the road when the slide happened.

They said the stretch of highway will be closed for several weeks while crews stabilize the ground and rebuild the road. Crews are setting up detours around the closed section of the highway.
