LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A jury in Louisville has convicted a man of killing a woman who was a witness in another murder case.
The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/102jUbu ) reports the Jefferson County Circuit Court jury found 20-year-old Steven Pettway guilty of murder and intimidating a witness in a legal process. Pettway showed little reaction when the verdict was read Wednesday.
The jury will return Thursday to recommend a sentence. Pettway faces a maximum of life in prison.
He was convicted in the 2009 death of 31-year-old Troya Sheckles. Prosecutors argued Dejuan Hammond got Pettway to kill Sheckles because she agreed to testify against Hammond's brother.
Hammond is to be tried in September.
Defense attorney Leslie Smith argued that Pettway didn't know about the Sheckles shooting, that there wasn't any physical evidence against him and that witness identifications didn't match her client.
