BEREA, Ky. (AP) — Madison County officials say Sheriff Jerry R. Combs has died after suffering a heart attack.
Deputy Willard Reardon told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the 61-year-old Combs collapsed at his parents' home in Berea, where he was tilling their garden, just after 8 p.m. EDT Monday. He was pronounced dead an hour and a half later at St. Joseph Hospital-Berea.
Chief Deputy Mike Coyle said the agency will continue the work Combs would have wanted.
Reardon said Combs had spent more than 30 years in law enforcement, most of it with the Berea Police Department, where he retired as assistant police chief in 2006. He was elected sheriff four years later and took office in January 2011.
The Richmond Register reported last year that Combs received a liver transplant in October.
