(Big Clifty, KY) – Saturday afternoon turned tragic in Big Clifty, KY when a train crashed into a vehicle that was crossing train tracks.
Jeff Gregory, KSP Public Affairs Officer Post 4, said the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe involved in the crash was driven by Carl Roof (62) of Big Clifty, and was occupied by a juvenile.
KSP Sgt. Greg Hill responded to the scene when the call was received by dispatchers at 5:10 p.m. Grayson County EMS and Deputy Coroner Larry Holeman assisted KSP at the scene.
The crash occurred on Hughes Mill Road when the Tahoe attempted to cross the tracks and was struck in the driver’s side door by a southbound train.
The SUV was forced off of the tracks, overturned, and came to rest on the south side of Hughes Mill Road next to the railroad tracks.
Roof was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Holeman. A juvenile passenger was airlifted to Kosair Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
