UK adding 2,000 surveillance cameras

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The University of Kentucky is adding campus security features that include ID cards that allow students to enter buildings after hours and 2,000 surveillance cameras.

The Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/1fmAmud ) says UK is spending almost $5 million to install the system. Next Level Security Systems will install it.

UK Police Chief Joe Monroe says the system will make it possible to monitor for crime and keep students, employees and visitors protected during emergencies.

Camera footage can be reviewed later, and the ID cards will track when students enter buildings after hours.

Kentucky ACLU spokeswoman Amber Duke says information that could be misused will be gathered, and it's important to know how long the information will be kept.
