Hiker rescued from Red River Gorge

STANTON, Ky. (AP) — The beauty of Red River Gorge ran into its dangers over the weekend for one hiker.

Rescuers from Powell and Wolfe counties say a rock climber's gear failed Saturday night in an area known as Pistol Ridge, sending the man falling 40 feet.

WLEX-TV in Lexington reported that crews got the hiker safely out of the area and took him to a hospital.

In order to get everyone safely out, the crews had to work their way along the cliff using ropes for safety and a basket to get the climber out.

Wolfe County Search and Rescue Squad worker John May told WKYT-TV the hiker was using a temporary anchor in a crack in the rock and fell when the equipment broke loose.

The man's name was not released.
