E. Ky. man sentenced to 40 years in doctor's death

HAZARD, Ky. (AP) — An eastern Kentucky man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing a doctor who asked him to take a urine test before being prescribed painkillers.

WLEX-TV (http://bit.ly/1ebw9L8 ) says John Combs of Redfox in Knott County was sentenced Thursday in the 2009 death of Dr. Dennis Sandlin.

Combs pleaded guilty to murder in Perry County Circuit Court in July, and prosecutors had recommended the 40-year sentence.

Police said Combs shot Sandlin at the clinic hours after being denied narcotics. Sandlin had worked there for almost two decades and was the clinic's only doctor.
