Local USDA Agencies Conduct 17th Annual Harvest of the Heart Food Drive
It is once again time for the annual "Harvest of the Heart" Food Drive in Grayson County. Each year the productivity of the American farmer increases. Yet, each year, people in our country (and our county) go without food. Even with the difficult economic times that are upon us all, we are truly blessed and it is hoped that many will welcome the opportunity to give a little back to help those in need. By consolidating our efforts, we have the potential to administer a more effective and efficient food drive. We have a wonderful opportunity to take care of our own here in Grayson County.
This year, the Grayson County USDA Agencies (FSA, NRCS, and RD) are returning to an exclusive partnership with county churches for this food drive effort. By focusing on our county churches and trying to create a unified “time and place” for this shared concern, we are hopeful that together we can meet or exceed our goals and expectations for donations. We are all forming a true partnership with the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry to address the ongoing problem of hunger in our county. This will be the seventeenth year of the food drive. Last year, the drive collected approximately 3600 pounds of food items for the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry. As was the case in 2012, the drive will be a weeklong, county-wide effort to collect canned and boxed non-perishable food items. The Alliance Food Pantry is located in the old hospital building in Leitchfield and is serving over 850 families per month with food support. All families are screened for eligibility before receiving assistance. ALL PROCEEDS OF THIS EFFORT WILL GODIRECTLY TO THE ALLIANCE FOOD PANTRY FOR USE AS THEY SEE FIT.
If your church is not currently participating and would like to join us in our efforts this year please contact the local Farm Service Agency at (270)259-3716 for details by November 5, 2013.
