Student Actors Tell Hairy Tale of Facing Down Fears
A cultural experience mixing mystical folklore with a message of self-reliance and personal empowerment recently brought down the house at Caneyville Elementary. The event, sponsored by the Grayson County Public Library, was performed by the Western Kentucky University Theater Department as part of their annual fall schools tour.
Adapted from the traditional southern folktale, the play is about a boy who is able to overcome the terrible Hairy Man and realize that he has the power in himself to face and overcome his fears.
While the young audience found the play entertaining, they were just as fascinated by the mechanics of the show. During a post-performance question and answer session, students had the opportunity to learn how the actors pulled off some pretty amazing stunts while making it look so easy.
Wiley has his first encounter with the Hairy Man. Students were intrigued with the three covered actors holding him up. The trio played roles as varied as the tree to a table and chairs, to a book stand.
The full cast and director took lots of questions from students and demonstrated many of the stunts performed throughout the play.
