Weather takes a 180: cold, snow, rain, sleet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky residents have said goodbye to temperatures in the 70s for the time being and are gritting their teeth as forecasts fill with sleet, snow and plummeting thermometer readings.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for western and central Kentucky through late Friday or early Saturday, while eastern Kentucky had a flood watch in effect into Saturday morning. Some parts of the state were expecting single-digit temperatures Friday night.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet maintenance crews were out treating roadways early Friday in anticipation of the winter weather, and multiple school districts called off classes.

Gov. Steve Beshear urged residents to prepare for possible power outages and difficult travel. He said the state's emergency management system will monitor conditions and stay in contact with local officials.
