Man accused of killing deputy enters plea

LEBANON, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky man has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a deputy last year in Marion County.

Media reported Dewayne Shipp entered a plea to murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon on Friday in a Marion County courtroom.

He was accused of gunning down 31-year-old Marion County Deputy Anthony Rakes last November. Rakes was mortally wounded while checking on a car stopped in the middle of US 68 near Lebanon.

Sheriff Jimmy Clements said he is comfortable with the plea that takes the death penalty off the table because Shipp will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Shipp's attorney, Tom Griffiths, said his client has always wanted to take responsibility for what happened.

Formal sentencing was set for Jan. 23.
