Construction firm owners plead not guilty

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The owners of a Magoffin County construction firm who are accused in a bid-rigging and kickback scheme with the judge-executive of Morgan County have entered not guilty pleas.

Kenneth Gambill and his wife, Ruth, had their first appearance in federal court on Monday.

The indictment accuses Morgan County Judge-Executive Tim Conley of steering contracts worth $1.1 million to a company owned by the couple in exchange for "gifts, payments and other things of value."

Conley entered a not guilty plea to the charges on Dec. 10.

Mark Wohlander, who is representing Kenneth Gambill, told the Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/1hbWHQD) that the charges stem from a 60-day telephone wiretap. He said didn't know whether federal authorities had tapped Conley's phone or Gambill's.
