Grimes to talk about eastern Ky. issues

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes is planning a speech about eastern Kentucky issues later this week.

Grimes' campaign says she'll talk about jobs and quality-of-life issues in a part of the state hard hit by the downturn in the coal economy. Thousands of miners have lost their jobs in the last couple of years, and many in the region blame more stringent federal regulations as a main cause.

Grimes' campaign stop is scheduled for Thursday evening at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg.

In another campaign development, Grimes has picked up endorsements from the Kentucky Education Association and the National Education Association.

Grimes is seeking the seat held by five-term Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell.

McConnell is being challenged in the GOP primary by Louisville businessman Matt Bevin.
