(Leitchfield, KY) The Grayson County Sheriff's Department responded to seven accidents this morning due to black ice caused by rain the area received last night freezing in the cold morning temperatures. The release said the accidents ranged from cars sliding off the roadway, to overturned vehicles, with a head-on collision resulting in a single fatality.
Kentucky State Police also issued a statement regarding the fatality accident, which occurred in the 4000 block of Lilac Road four-and-a-half miles from Leitchfield. According to state police, 16-year old Lucia Taylor was operating a 1997 Jeep northbound on Lilac Road when she encountered 64-year old Carol Helphenstine of Leitchfield driving southbound in a 2011 Kia. As Taylor crested a hill that was covered in black ice, she lost control of her vehicle, crossed the center line, and collided head-on with Helphenstine, whose vehicle was in the southbound lane.
The vehicle being driven by Taylor slid off of the east side of the road and overturned onto its side. The Kia driven my Helphenstine slid into a ditchline on the west side of Lilac Road.
Helphenstine was pronouncned dead at the scene by the Grayson County Coroner's Office. Taylor was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital.
Kentucky State Police were assisted at the scene by the Grayson County Sheriff's Office, Grayson County EMS, and the Leitchfield Fire Department. The accident is currently under investigation by Kentucky State Police Detective Terry Whittaker.
