Chamber of Commerce luncheon focuses on healthy living and names TLRMC winner in fundraising contest

The Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Thursday afternoon at Centre On Main focused on health and wellness for children as well as adults.

Kristy Hodges, Grayson County School District Food Service Director and Kaitlin Harrison, Director of Nutrition Services at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center gave a presentation on the “My Plate” initiative which emphasizes eating proper portions and consuming a balanced diet comprised of, but not limited to, ample fruits and vegetables.

“My Plate” also stresses the importance of parents being good role models to their children as it pertains to eating healthy. Like many things,  lifelong habits are oftentimes formed in the pre-adolescent years, and one’s eating habits are no different.

Also at the luncheon, catered by K’s Café and Catering in Clarkson, the United Way fundraising winner in a contest between Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center and the Grayson County School District was revealed.

The two entities combined to raise $35,000.00 for United Way, with the hospital coming out victorious in the contest by raising $20,000.00.

Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center CEO Wayne Meriwether accepted a trophy from United Way representative Chris Wilborn on behalf of hospital employees for the outstanding job they did in raising the donations.

Grayson County High School math teacher Sharon Sloan, who also serves as the Cougar’s academic coach, announced that the school is asking local businesses to aid students by allowing them to “shadow,” intern, or provide summer employment in a student’s field of interest.

This will give the students valuable, real-life experience, while also serving to bolstering each student participant’s college resume package.
