Preparation program helps keep students on track

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Advisers are meeting with eighth- and 10th-grade students across Kentucky this month in a program designed to make sure the young people are academically prepared for college or career.

It's called Operation Preparation, and this year's is the third annual event. The Kentucky Department of Education says it gives students a chance to discuss career aspirations and required education or training, whether the student is on target to meet goals and whether the student is taking recommended courses.

The department says college and career readiness is at 54.1 percent, and this year's goal is 58 percent.

Operation Preparation offers a supplement to schools' overall advising programs. The department says most Kentucky school districts are participating along with the Kentucky School for the Blind and the Kentucky School for the Deaf.
