After being filed separately as House Bill 124, a bill to reclassify Clarkson from a 6th class city to a 5th class city has been added as an amendment to House Bill 398, along with several other cities currently seeking reclassification in Kentucky.
The 2010 Census put Clarkson’s population at 875. To be classified as a 5th class city, Clarkson needs a population of 1,000 to 2,999 people.
City officials say a bump up in class size would benefit Clarkson as it continues to grow.
Other cities seeking a bump in class are Kuttawa, in Lyon County; Louisa, in Lawrence County; Russell Springs, in Russell County, and Booneville, in Owsley County.
The bill has made it out of committee and should go before the full House in Frankfort early next week.
