Renowned artist Larry Elmore mentors GCHS students

From Caryn Lewis, Public Information Officer for Grayson County Schools:

Grayson County’s own internationally renowned artist, Larry Elmore, recently shared the lessons of a creative lifetime with Grayson County High School's aspiring artists. With the rapid-fire eloquence of a man who has traveled the world, Elmore brought home the values learned and earned from small town America.
“It’s not some special person from some big city that becomes the next artist, the next writer, the next actor; most are small town America," Elmore said.
Elmore says he’s been lucky to meet so many talented people, and always tries to discover what they did to attain their success.

“They’re just normal people, they had a love of what they did, and they honed their skills, and made it," Elmore said."It doesn’t make any difference where you’re from.”
Elmore stressed the connection of education to artistic endeavors. Subjects not usually regarded as “creative,” like math and science, often play into his work. And openness to learning  also provides the ability to take advantage of more opportunities throughout life.
While admitting that he’s the exception, he pointed out that as the world keeps getting smaller, it’s becoming easier to succeed.  The “secret” he told students is learning, hard work, and developing both creative skills and the confidence to sell themselves, “because nobody else is going to do it for you.”
