Winds delaying slide of new Ohio River bridge

MADISON, Ind. (AP) — Highway officials say the slide of the new Ohio River bridge between Madison, Ind., and Milton, Ky. will be on hold for at least a couple days because of high winds.

Crews started work Wednesday moving the new span from its temporary supports across steel rails onto rehabilitated piers of the previous bridge.

Officials say crews moved the span about 30 percent of the 55 feet it needs to go before winds became too gusty. Those high winds affect the synchronization of the slide.

The bridge has been closed since a March 11 construction accident. Officials say it will take about a week to open the bridge once the new span is in place.

Work began in late 2010 on a $100 million project to replace the old bridge.
