Ky. lawmakers finish work highlighted by budget

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky lawmakers have completed work in a legislative session highlighted by passage of a new two-year state budget.

The session ended Tuesday night after a $4.1 billion road spending plan cleared the House and Senate.

A two-day wrap-up session also resulted in final approval of a bill to revamp the state's juvenile justice system.

The session began in January with Gov. Steve Beshear pushing expanded gambling and an overhaul to the state's tax code. Both issues fizzled, though lawmakers gave tax relief to the state's bourbon industry.

The biggest accomplishment was passage of a $20.3 billion, two-year state budget that increases state support for elementary and secondary schools. Another high-profile bill that passed allows doctors at two Kentucky research hospitals to prescribe medicinal oil derived from marijuana or hemp.
