The Grayson Sheriff and Fire Departments, along with EMS, responded to a car versus Amish buggy collision on Brandenburg Road at the intersection of Hanging Rock Road just before noon on Monday.
A blue Cadillac De Ville traveling north on Brandenburg Road topped a small hill and rear-ended the buggy, which was carrying five people.
“I came up on top of the hill and there they were (the buggy); I tried to (swerve to) miss them instead of hitting my breaks, but … .” Jim Lunsford, the driver of the Cadillac said, shrugging his shoulders and obviously distraught.
The Amish family in the buggy, named the Hoovers, had two of their three children uninjured in the accident, with one child suffering a laceration to the head. The injured child was X-rayed at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center and was given a clean bill of health. The parents both suffered moderate lower leg injuries.
The entire Hoover family involved in the accident were transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center.
Police personnel closed Brandenburg Road at the accident scene for approximately one hour. The road was re-opened to one lane traffic at approximately 1:00. Both lanes were open to two-way traffic at 1:20.
The horse pulling the buggy was killed in the accident.
The Cadillac sustained serious front end damage while the buggy was obliterated.
