Wastewater release leads to warnings in Bullitt

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky officials say untreated wastewater has been released into two streams in Bullitt County, leading them to warn the public to avoid wading, fishing and swimming there.

The Kentucky Division of Water has posted signs to inform visitors at an unnamed tributary of Brooks Run and the mainstem of Brooks Run below the tributary.

High levels of E. coli were detected in the water. E. coli is a digestive bacteria found in birds and mammals, including humans.

The Energy and Environment Cabinet says the release of untreated wastewater occurred as a result of a system failure at the Hunters Hollow Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The cabinet said the Department for Environmental Protection is working with the Department of Public Health to issue advisories on health impacts from high fecal bacterial levels.
