AmeriCorps funding nearly $5M for Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky is receiving nearly $5 million in service grants to help groups that teach and tutor children, provide drug resistance education, help victims of domestic violence and address homelessness.

The $4.8 million in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service was announced Monday by Gov. Steve Beshear's office.

Beshear said in a news release that AmeriCorps members will learn civic and leadership skills as they help communities meet local needs.

The governor's office said more than 9,100 Kentucky residents have served more than 14 million hours and have qualified for education awards of more than $31 million since AmeriCorps began in 1994.

Executive Director Joe Bringardner of the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service says it's hoped that AmeriCorps programs will eventually exist in every Kentucky county.
