Seattle aims to lead nation to $15 minimum wage

SEATTLE (AP) — They've crowded into stuffy rallies at a Seattle union hall, protested in front of fast food restaurants and marched down city streets. Backers of an immediate increase to the minimum wage have shouted they're not patient.

But they'll have to patient under the Mayor Ed Murray's proposal to increase the minimum wage in Seattle.

The mayor's plan, which is backed by labor and business interests, gradually increases pay over at least five years. Murray's proposal gives businesses with more than 500 employees nationally at least three years to phase in the increase.

The group 15 Now is not giving up. They'll lobby the City Council and if that fails, they have the option of running a city measure.

Murray says he hopes to avoid a ballot fight in November.
