State police to handle more calls in Knox County

CORBIN, Ky. (AP) — A sheriff in southeastern Kentucky won't be answering as many emergency calls after losing the primary election.

Knox County Chief Deputy Derek Eubanks told media outlets that Sheriff John Pickard wants to focus on closing out cases that are already opened and other work involved in turning the office over to someone new.

Eubanks said Kentucky State Police would begin answering more calls that require investigations such as injury accidents and burglaries.

Capt. Phillip Burnett Jr., commander of the state police post that covers Knox County, confirmed that the agency has agreed to cover more cases.

Pickard lost his bid for a fourth term as sheriff on Tuesday to retired Kentucky State Police Trooper Mike Smith.
