Leitchfield Tourism caps aid to local rec leagues, suffers budgetary setback

On Tuesday morning, the Leitchfield Tourism Commission discussed various budgetary items, including an agreement by the commission to place a cap on the amount of money budgeted to assist local recreational leagues.

Little league baseball, girls softball and other local recreational sports generally suffer negative cash flow, sometimes in the thousands of dollars – last year, the girls recreational softball league lost $22,000.00. In last year’s commission budget, $77,900.00 was budgeted to help offset the monetary loss of the leagues, but the commission paid-out only $48,000.00

For this year’s budget, the commission opted to place a $30,000.00 ceiling on the financial assistance granted the sports. Still to be determined is how many dollars each individual sport will be allocated.

The Tourism Commission received 10 grant requests from various agencies  -- Christmas in the Park, parades promoters, the County Fair,  and Art in the Park are just a few -- and agreed to each request, for a total grant pay-out of just over $17,000.00.

Ilsa Johnson, Leitchfield Tourism Director, informed commission members that the state has changed the way it calculates the grant money it pays to local tourism commission around the state.

Last year the state grant money, considered a reimbursement for grant monies paid out by local tourism commissions, totaled $16,000.00. The re-calculation of how the grant money is divided, which is now based on total hotel/motel rooms in the area, leaves the Leitchfield Tourism Commission with only $1,250.00 in state grant money for the next fiscal year.
