The Leitchfield Tourism Commission took a tour of the nearly completed Leitchfield Aquatic Center on Tuesday morning. While tremendous progress has been made, and a July 1 target date for the center to open to the public is still on schedule, there remains work to be completed.
Kevin Collard, owner of Pine View Nurseries, reported that he’s altering the amount and size of the landscaping plants to be used at the park, opting to go with smaller plants and plot sizes, which will be less labor-intensive to care for and maintain.
Collard said he feels comfortable that his company can come in either at, or under the $20,000.00 budgeted for the center’s landscaping.
Other final-touch preparations being made at the center include installation of a security system, Internet access and telephone lines.
Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson reported that the pool deck coating will take place this week, and after allowing 24 hours for the coating to cure, the Aquatic Center pool areas will be filled with water.
Additionally, Johnson said that the only bid received on who is to construct and supply the water park’s deck chairs came from Sunbrite Outdoor Furniture. The company’s bid was for $20,020.00 for 175 chairs ($114.00 per chair), and was accepted by the commission.
Finally, in preparation for a “soft” June 15 opening, in which city employees and their families will serve as test pilots for Aquatic Center operations, training sessions for the water park staff is fully underway.
Johnson also said that a second three-story water slide will be added for the 2015 summer season at a cost of approximately $150,000.00.
