Kentucky State Police in Elizabethtown are investigating a head-on collision that occurred at approximately 9:36 on Tuesday night on KY Hwy 313, approximately one mile North of I-65. At about 9:05, police received a complaint from the 3000 block of Wooldridge Ferry Road of a possible kidnapping in progress.
Troopers responded to the scene and spoke with a woman who said that she and her three minor children were abducted at knife-point earlier in the night. The woman told Troopers that she managed to get out of her 2006 Dodge Van, and get to a residence to call for help, but the alleged perpetrator had left with her three small children.
A short time later, a Trooper observed the vehicle in question pass the residence. The Trooper then attempted to catch up with the van allegedly containing the children. As the Trooper pulled in behind the vehicle, just before the intersection of Wooldridge Ferry Road and Hwy 313, he activated his emergency equipment and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle then turned South on Hwy 313 and went a short distance before crossing the center line and striking a 2005 Jeep Liberty that was being driven by Ashlee Berry, 22, of Radcliff.
Berry’s vehicle then rolled down an embankment on the East side of the roadway. Berry was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin County Coroner.
The driver of the Dodge Caravan, Kyle David Thompson, 24, of Vine Grove, and three minor children were also injured in the crash. Thompson was transported by Hardin County EMS to the University of Louisville Hospital with serious injuries. He was placed under arrest on an outstanding warrant for Failure to Comply with the Sex Offender Registry.
Any other pending charges will be presented to a grand jury at a later date.
The three juveniles were airlifted to Kosair Children's Hospital and remain in critical condition. Hwy 313 was shut down for several hours while Troopers reconstructed the accident.
