LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is portraying his Democratic opponent as out of touch with the struggles of Kentucky's coal miners.
In remarks prepared for a Republican crowd Saturday night in Louisville, McConnell said Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes has been so busy raising money from liberal activists that she can't tell the difference between a miner and a European male model.
Released early by McConnell's campaign, the remarks refer to Grimes' use of a Ukrainian model posing as a miner in an early newspaper ad. Grimes' campaign says the photo was replaced before the ad ran.
Grimes has condemned President Barack Obama's plan for stricter emissions standards on coal-fired power plants.
Grimes' campaign says she talked about the struggles in coal country to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at a fundraiser.
