McConnell to host Thursday Town Hall Meeting at Centre on Main

Republican U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell will be in Leitchfield at the Centre on Main for a Town Hall meeting on Thursday at 12:30. McConnell recently finished a two-day bus tour through Kentucky’s coal country which included a stop in neighboring Ohio County where the Senate’s Minority Leader appeared with presumptive 2016 presidential contender, Senator Rand Paul.

McConnell’s visit to Grayson County comes only a few weeks after his Democratic challenger, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, came to River Rough Dam State Resort Park Lodge on a 14 stop bus tour leading up to Fancy Farm.

McConnell, seeking a sixth term in the Senate, finds himself in a tight and contentious race with Grimes, a race centered on Kentucky’s coal industry. The Commonwealth’s long-standing coal production is being threatened by a tough-minded EPA that is looking to expand anti-pollution measures included in the Clean Air Act to cover carbon emissions in modified or new plants.

The Associated Press reports more than 32 mostly coal-fired power plants will close nationwide, and another 36 plants could also be forced to shut down as a result of new EPA rules regulating air pollution.

Both candidates regularly accuse the other of being a coal antagonist.

The race, being watched closely by national political pundits, is considered a key matchup which could alter the balance of power in Washington.

McConnell last visited Grayson County on February 22, as he took part in the county’s Lincoln Day festivities at the high school.
