Heritage Media Of Kentucky, Inc – Company Profile

Heritage Media Of Kentucky, Inc is the parent company of WKHG-FM (K105), WMTL-AM (AM870 The Moose), www.k105.com, The Twin Lakes Times, and K105 Internet Services.

HMOK was incorporated in November of 1994 to purchase radio entities in South Central Kentucky.  The corporation name was selected because it’s purpose was to own and operate the heritage radio stations in Leitchfield, KY.  WMTL began broadcasting in January 1959 while WKHG began broadcasting in January of 1968.  Coincidentally, the first corporate name considered by HMOK was “Impact Media”.  One small sign of the original corporate name still exists.  You may have noticed the “lightning bolt” in the K105 logo.  The lightning bolt in the logo design was selected when the name “Impact Media” was still being considered.  Legend has it that the lightning bolt is actually an homage to the Caneyville “Purple Flashes” because the founding corporate officers and shareholders are natives of the Caneyville area.

After regulatory approval, HMOK took control of radio stations WKHG and WMTL on February 1, 1995.

In May of 2000, HMOK formed its Internet Services Division.  The division was created to serve business customers with Internet related services and marketing.  The division’s first products were to build, design and host websites for it’s radio clients.  Out of that grew relationships with hundreds of businesses in South Central Kentucky.  In late 2000, the division began offering broadband and dial up Internet services to the Grayson County, KY area.  Wireless Internet services were made available to customers in early 2002.  In May of 2003, K105 Internet Services began offering DSL Services to 25 Kentucky Counties.

Not surprisingly, the very first website that K105’s Internet Services Division ever designed was its very own www.k105.com.  What is surprising however is that Mother Nature happened to intervene on when k105.com would first me made available to the public.  Our staff had been working on the design and launch of k105.com for weeks leading up to it’s schedule June 1st unveiling.  Mother Nature sped up our timetable when on the afternoon of May 23, 2000, a tornado swept across North Leitchfield, leaving $28 Million in damage in its wake.  K105’s News Department actually followed the tornado as it dissected Leitchfield and were the first to have pictures of this devastating event.  Although the rough edges hadn’t been smoothed down on the site, company management decided that the site would immediately go live.  We began promoting on our radio stations that pictures of the Tornado were available.  Within 2 hours, we received our first 5,000 hits.  And the rest as they say, “Is History”.

In March 2005, k105.com received it’s 10,000,000th hit.  As of May 2005, the website had received 10.6 Million hits from more than 604,000 Visitors.

In early 2005, K105 Internet Services set about the process of re-tooling its network to expand it’s capacity and to roll out a new product.  This new product will change the way it delivers news and information to the coverage area served by the company.  While it was months in construction, The Twin Lakes Times, Heritage Media Of Kentucky’s newest product, was unveiled to the public on June 1, 2005.
