Butler County nips Cougars at the end, 52-46

In a game in which there were eight ties and nine lead changes, the Butler Cougar Bears scored the last six points of the game to beat Grayson County 52-46 last Friday evening in Morgantown.

This game was a back-and-forth affair from the start and neither team lead by more than five points until the very end.

The Cougars scored the final four points of the first period to take their largest lead of the night, 12-7 heading into the second period.

A lay-in by Butler County’s Leevi McMillan at the 3:27 mark of the second quarter gave the Bears their first lead of the night, 17-16, but the Cougars led by two points, 23-21 at the half.

There were three ties and three lead changes in the third period. The Bears led by four points, 33-29 with 2:09 remaining, but the Cougars scored the final four points to tie it at 33-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bears scored six unanswered points to take a five-point lead, 43-38 at the 3:52 mark, but the Cougars responded with a 6-0 run of their own to go back on top 44-43 at the 2:38 mark.

A lay-in by Hunter Tomes with 1:27 remaining tied the score one last time, 46-46 with 1:27 left, but the Cougars would not score again. Three straight turnovers allowed the Bears to score the final six points of the game to win going away.

Jaden Hurt led the Bears with 13 points, while Parker Rice added 10.

Nolan Shartzer led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Spencer Sharp scored eight points, while Q’Daryius McHenry added six. McHenry also led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.

Jaxon Higdon finished with five points, while Tomes finished with four. Josh Embry and Wyatt Schultz both scored two points to complete the scoring.
