The Lady Cougar soccer team took a 5-4 victory Thursday evening at Breckinridge County in the second round of penalty kicks following a 4-4 tie in regulation and two five-minute overtime periods.

After the first round of penalty kicks ended in a 3-3 tie, sophomore goal keeper, Sierra Secora, made a stop on the shot of Breck junior Lauren Lucas, meaning if the Lady Cougars made their next shot they would win the game. Senior Hannah McDowell stepped up and put the ball past Lady Tiger goal keeper Shelbey Walz for the win.

The overtime periods and the penalty-kick shootout only became necessary because Breck junior Sydney Tucker scored a goal with 13 seconds left to play to knot the score at 4-4.

The Lady Cougars held a 2-1 lead at the half on two goals by junior Ellie Evans, but Breck’s Tucker scored in the first minute of play in the second half to tie it at 2-2.

Breck junior Chloe Peterson put the Lady Tigers in front 3-2 with a goal in the 63rd minute of play.

The Lady Cougars missed a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 74th minute when junior Malorie Zurmehly’s shot at an open Lady Tiger net sailed just wide-right.

But just a minute later, Evans t0ook a pass from senior Gillian Johnston and put the ball into the net to tie it at 3-3.

Then, just a minute later, Johnston had the ball on the left sideline about 35 yards out from the Breck goal. She let fly with a long shot that clanged off the right upright and into the net to give the Lady Cougars a 4-3 lead.

That set up the final minute of play when Tucker tied the score and sent the game into overtime. Neither team could muster a goal in the two five-minute overtimes, sending the game to penalty kicks.

Marcella Rogers scored first for Breck, but Evans missed on her first shot, giving the Lady Tigers a 1-0 advantage. Peterson and Johnston followed with goals to make it 2-1.

Breck’s Madison Driskell had her shot sail high over the crossbar before senior Marinah Akridge scored to tie it at 2-2.The goal keepers stepped up and made saves on the fourth round, before Tucker scored in the fifth round to give the Lady Tigers a 3-2 lead.

That left it up to Zurmehly, who put the ball past Walz to tie it at 3-3 and send it to the second round where the first team with an advantage would be the winner.

That set up the Secora save and McDowell’s winning shot, The Lady Cougars are now 1-1 on the season.
