Grayson County Schools (GCS) Superintendent Doug Robinson has announced that the school district will continue virtual instruction until November 24, with an eye on returning to in-person instruction on November 30.

(The complete statement from Robinson to parents/guardians and students can be found below.)

The decision comes as Grayson County continues to be in the “red,” as the spread of coronavirus in the community remains “critical,” according to the Kentucky Department for Public Health. The county has averaged nearly 14 new cases of the virus per day since October 27, and the 700 cases confirmed since the onset of the pandemic equates to one case for every 38.6 residents.

This week, GCS officials have reported six new cases of COVID-19 within the school system, and since November 2, 22 cases have been confirmed in the district. As of Thursday evening, the district reported 18 active cases and 196 people quarantined: 173 students and 23 staff, according to the district’s COVID-19 Dashboard.

On Wednesday, school officials said the three latest coronavirus cases are a student at Clarkson Elementary School and two students at Grayson County High School. The Clarkson student and one of the high school students diagnosed last attended school on October 30, while the other positive high school student last attended school on November 4.

The new cases follow a staff member at Lawler Elementary School testing positive on Monday, with a staff member at Clarkson and another staff member at Lawler testing positive on Tuesday.

On Thursday, state officials reported 2,342 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Kentucky over the previous 24 hours, the third highest number of new cases announced in a single day since the beginning of the pandemic. The statewide positivity rate rose to its highest level since early May on Thursday, checking in at 8.29 percent.
