A Leitchfield man has suffered critical injuries after accidentally riding a bicycle into a trailer on South Main Street.

Monday evening at approximately 6:15, the Leitchfield Fire and Police Departments along with EMS responded to the 800 block of South Main Street on the report of a traffic accident.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered a man on a bicycle, 25-year-old Mason Johnson, was traveling north on the shoulder of the northbound lanes when he began to cross the roadway and struck the rear of a trailer being pulled by a truck, police and multiple witnesses said.

The impact tossed Johnson several feet off the bicycle and into the middle of the southbound lanes.

Johnson, although conscious, suffered what appeared to be critical injuries. He was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center where he was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.

His current condition is not known.

Leitchfield Police Officer Missy Skaggs investigated the accident and was assisted by fellow Officers Bart Glenn, Adam Cottrell and Kelsey Overton.

For several minutes, EMS personnel provided treatment at the scene, assisted by the Leitchfield Fire Department.
