The Somerset Police Department and federal agencies have executed a major drug bust following a five-month investigation.

According to Somerset police, the investigation resulted in the seizure of 30 pounds of methamphetamine, $30,000 in cash and multiple firearms.

Police arrested 37-year-old Wesley A. Calhoun and Dennie A. Smith, both of Somerset, and charged each with conspiracy to distribute 550 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture containing methamphetamine.

Calhoun was additionally charged with possession of a firearm in the furtherance of drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The investigation began in February when Somerset police seized 10 grams of methamphetamine while serving a warrant at Smith’s residence. Police also discovered a safe in the home. Authorities obtained a search warrant for the safe and found an additional 4.5 grams of the drug and cash.

Police then gathered information which led authorities to search other properties, which resulted in Calhoun being identified as being part of a conspiracy to distribute narcotics.

The two men were arrested on June 15.

The Somerset Police Department was assisted in the investigation by Kentucky State Police, the DEA and FBI.

Calhoun is lodged on no bond at the Laurel County Correctional Center. Police have not identified where Smith is being held.
