A week after Grayson County experienced a nearly 44 percent drop in COVID-19 cases, the number of new COVID cases jumped nearly 70 percent last week, as the positivity rate rose 50 percent.

For the week ending Sunday, the county reported 106 new cases of the virus to the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH), a 68.3 percent increase from the 63 announced the previous week.

The county has now had 531 new cases over the last six weeks (88.5 per week).

The county’s positivity rate, which was 18.45 percent last week, checked in at 27.68 percent for the week ending Sunday, an even 50 percent increase from two weeks ago.

(Positivity rate and case number statistics do not include residents who conduct home tests and fail to report results to the Grayson Co. Health Department).

One new death was reported, raising the county’s death toll to 139, the KDPH reports.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Grayson Co. has had 8,856 cases of the virus diagnosed.

With the increase in the number of cases and positivity rate, Grayson Co. is back in the “orange,” indicating a “medium” spread of the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The county was in the “green” the two previous weeks, indicating a “low” spread of COVID within the community.

Hart Co. is the only bordering county in the “red,” signaling a “high” spread of the virus, according to the CDC.

There are 79 Kentucky counties in the “red,” with 30 in the “orange” and 11 in the “green.”
