Grayson County Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson has declared this week, “Family Resource and Youth Services Center Coordinators Appreciation Week.”

On Friday, Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) coordinators met with Henderson, state Sen. Stephen Meredith, state Rep. Samara Heavrin, and Josh Baldwin, Director of Pupil Personnel for Grayson County Schools and the FRYSC District contact, to sign a proclamation honoring coordinators.

“Across Kentucky, over 850 Family Resource and Youth Services Centers work in the schools directly to provide support to our children and families,” Clarkson Family Resource Coordinator (FRC) Ann Brooks said.

Local FRYSCs are in each Grayson County public school, Brooks said, to remove non-academic barriers to student achievement, bridge gaps to needed resources, and collaborate the resources of school and communities for the success of students, families and communities.

“Recent surveys report that educators, parents, and community partners feel that the FRYSCs are a necessary component of Kentucky educational programming,” Brooks stated. “The FRYSC programs are vital to students, (as they) empower families, and help to improve schools.”

Coordinators collaborate with multiple local resources, including the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry, Community Action, the UK Extension Office, Adult Education, churches, businesses, and other civic groups.

“The partnerships with these local resources ensure children and families have access to food, clothing, weekend food, housing, utilities, holiday assistance, prevention programs, and more,” Brooks said. “The services provided in schools are each uniquely specific to the individual child or family’s needs.”

The motto of the FRYSC is “whatever it takes,” Brooks said, “and each coordinator makes that a guiding principle in their center.”

Local Family and Youth Resource Coordinators are: Grayson Co. HS Youth Services Coordinator Barbara Allen, Caneyville/Lawler FRC Kim Cannon, Clarkson FRC Ann Brooks and Leitchfield FRYSC Shalee Watson.
