Todd Johnston has stepped down as the head coach of the Grayson County High School Lady Cougar basketball program.

Johnston was hired as the leader of the Lady Cougars in October 2021. In the two seasons, the team went 14-39, with a drastic eight-win improvement from the first to the second year.

“I’ve loved being the girls’ coach the last 2 years and will miss it and the girls,” Johnston told K105. “I’m not sure I have the energy to continue and do the job the way it needs to be done.”

The Lady Cougars were the second team that he was at the helm of at GCHS. He spent 12 seasons as the head coach of the Cougar boys team where he won a pair of regional titles and amassed a school-record 225 wins.

A young core is set to return for Grayson County next season including 78% of their scoring.

The next head coach will be the fourth since Daniel Pharis resigned after winning the first region championship in program history in 2017.

Summer basketball is scheduled to begin in June with the new season tipping off in late November.
