The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office announced a deputy is slated to become the new School Resource Officer (SRO) at Caneyville Elementary School.

Sheriff Norman Chaffins said Monday that Deputy Caleb Owens has been selected for the position.

Owens, who began his law enforcement career with the Greensburg Police Department, joined the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office in April 2021. He has been a member of law enforcement for about four years.

“As someone that currently has one child in the school system and has had three (children) graduate from Grayson County High School, I understand the importance of having an SRO in each school,” Chaffins said. “However, more importantly, is having a deputy that loves kids and wants to be there; not just a warm body. Rest assured, your children are in excellent hands with Deputy Owens standing watch and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be a great role model for your kiddos!”

The 28-year-old Owens, who seems to have a ubiquitous smile on his face and a friendly demeanor, is thankful for the opportunity to serve the community in this position, and is eager to protect, serve and be a positive role model to the children of Caneyville Elementary.

“I want to start by saying thank you to Sheriff Chaffins and the residents of Grayson County for giving me the opportunity to serve them in his capacity,” Owens said. “As a father of four, I can think of nothing more important to me than the safety of my kids, therefore, I do not take this responsibility lightly. Never should there be an instance where our children are left to defend themselves in the face of danger. It is my hope and prayer that the students and staff of Caneyville and our entire school district never face such a traumatic incident, but if they do, rest assured I will do my best to keep them safe regardless of the circumstances.”

“Although safety is my number one concern,” he added, “I also consider it a goal of mine to be a positive and encouraging influence on each child I come into contact with.”

Owens and his wife Rachel have four children, ages eight, six and four-year-old twins.
