Grayson County’s Kenton Cornwell, Brayden Mudd, and Matthew Phillips each won individual championships to help the Cougars to a third-place finish at the GRVC competition on Saturday.

Cornwell took the title in the 132-pound weight class with Phillips taking the 220 and Mudd at 181.

Luke Sharp (114), Matthew McCallister (148), Sawyer Drake (275), and Will Vincent (305) each finished in second in the meet.

“I think we competed well,” head coach Bryan Jones said. “We finished one point out of second place and on another day maybe we get a couple lifts we missed and maybe they miss a couple they got and we finish second. It’s always great to be able to compare ourselves to others and see how we fare. We have some work to do. We have to get stronger in order to be our most competitive.”

In other results, Trystan Brooks came in third, Caleb Constant and Greyson Chaffins finished fourth, and Justin Sims and Carter Dennis were fifth.

The weightlifting competition made its return this year and is the first of multiple events scheduled.

“I just want to say that I think it is great to get the GRVC back going starting with this weightlifting meet,” Jones said. “We will also have a 7 on 7 tournament and have a conference JV schedule that results in there being a JV Conference Champion.”

The 2023 Grayson County football season opens in August as they face the Edmonson County Wildcats in Brownsville.
