A man posing as a cop attempted to pull over an off-duty officer.
The incident happened on Wednesday night when an off-duty officer from Garrard County told Harrodsburg dispatch that a Honda Pilot was displaying flashing blue and red lights and traveling at a high rate of speed in an attempt to compel the off-duty officer to slow down.
The Harrodsburg Police Department located the Honda which had “emergency-style lights visible through the rear glass, along with a decal ending in ‘PD,’ resembling a police cruiser marking,” WKYT.com reports.
When police made contact with the driver, 53-year-old Justin Y. Gov, of Stanford, he admitted that he was using the lights to get speeding motorists to slow down.
“He would swerve in front of the car that he thought was speeding and then turn all of his lights, in his words, trying to get them to slow down,” Harrodsburg Police Chief Scott Elder told the Lexington television station.
When the Honda’s lights were in use, police said the vehicle appeared to be a genuine law enforcement vehicle. During a search of the Honda, officers found a reflective vest, latex gloves and items similar to parking citations.
Gov was arrested and charged with impersonating a peace officer, improper use of blue lights and having a license plate not eligible for use. Additionally, the Honda was seized for possible forfeiture.
Gov was lodged in the Jessamine County Detention Center. He has since been released.
