A Hardin County man has been indicted after shooting his brother during an argument over the suspect’s drinking.
The shooting happened Friday night, June 19, 2026, when 51-year-old Jimmy G. Carter, of Rineyville, shot his brother in the suspect’s backyard, according to a report by The News-Enterprise.
Kentucky State Police was not alerted to the shooting until the victim arrived at Baptist Health Hardin where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The suspect’s wife told police that Carter and the victim were in the backyard, as Carter was drinking. Carter’s wife and the victim were encouraging the suspect not to drink given his “mental health recently,” The News-Enterprise reports.
Carter then retrieved a firearm and shot his brother.
Carter’s wife transported the victim to the hospital. The victim was treated and released from Baptist Health Hardin.
The suspect was recently indicted by a Hardin County Grand Jury for second-degree assault, felony wanton endangerment (discharge of a firearm) and first-degree criminal mischief.
Carter is being held in the Hardin County Detention Center.
