GCHS alum Brooks earns first collegiate cross country win

Houston Brooks

Grayson County High School alum Houston Brooks won his first collegiate cross country race on Saturday at Berea College.

Brooks, a sophomore at Centre, completed the 8K course in 26:46, finishing more than 30 seconds ahead of second place.

His performance helped the Colonels earn the team victory.

Brooks wasn’t the only former Cougar in the race.

Jackson Crume, a sophomore at Union Commonwealth, finished third overall. Gabriel Dennis, a freshman at Alice Lloyd, also competed, making his collegiate debut.

The three former Cougars will have another opportunity to compete against one another later this fall. Brooks, Crume and Dennis are all scheduled to run in the Louisville XC Classic on Oct. 3 at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park. The Grayson County Cougar cross country team will also compete in the event’s high school races.
