A man has been arrested after strangling a Dollar General employee and throwing the victim to the ground.

The Franklin Police Department was dispatched on Wednesday to an assault at the Dollar General store at 501 North College Street, according to a report by WNKY’s Atlee McHeffey.

Upon arriving at the scene, store employees told police that 46-year-old Sola Arikawe was allowed to stay in the store for several days due to the extreme heat. Employees also provided Arikawe with water.

On Wednesday, Arikawe began asking customers for money, spurring the employees to ask the suspect to leave the store. Arikawe became belligerent and strangled an employee before “slamming the employee to the ground,” WNKY.com reports.

The suspect fled the scene following the assault, which was captured on surveillance video, but was soon located by police and arrested.

Arikawe was charged with first-degree strangulation, fourth-degree assault and giving an officer false identifying information.

He was lodged in the Simpson County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.
