Opening Thursday night’s Grayson County School Board meeting was fifth grade Caneyville Elementary School student Bethany Ray, who played two songs on the violin, an instrument she’s only been playing since September.

Ray, who plays by ear, is also an accomplished vocalist.

After Ray's exceptional performance, Caneyville principal George Meredith recognized the school’s Academic Team for winning the District 27 championship, after which a snippet from a Crusade for Children broadcast was played touting the positive effects the school’s Sensory Room has had on a five-year-old student named David, who has been diagnosed with autism.

The rooms often have dim lighting, soothing colors, and vestibular swings and were created for children with sensory disorders. They typically have stations, with active areas, calming areas and various types of sensory activities.

Teachers Christina Decker and Keycia Collard said being introduced to the room has made a huge difference in David’s life because of his vastly improved ability to communicate and interact with teachers.

School Board business

During the business portion of the meeting, board members approved bids for painting the ceiling and vents of the high school gym, and resurfacing a parking lot at the high school and two parking lots at Caneyville Elementary.

Also approved was a trip by the Lady Cougar soccer team to Lexington in July to participate in the Bluegrass Games. The Art Club was also approved for an excursion to New York City in April of next year.
